Why You Need Ski Insurance
Its the time of year when many people head off to the snowy slopes for a little winter sports fun. As skiing and snowboarding grow in popularity many people are almost oblivious to the dangers that winter sports present.
Accident rates for snowboarders and skiers are about the same. Recklessness has been cited as one primary cause of many collision related accidents. And reckless behaviour on the slopes is something that both skiers and snowboarders are guilty of. Both skiers and snowboarders can be equally reckless, putting others at risk.
One of the most common injuries that results from collisions is damage to the knee. But every year there are many far more serious injuries that result in paralysis, brain damage and even death.
Here is just a glance at some of the most common accidents that occur on the slopes.
Collisions.
There is a skier responsibility code that snowboarders and skiers should be aware of as this indicates that people further down the slope always have right of way. Avoiding collisions with these people is your responsibility. Unfortunately many people are unaware of the responsibility code and often don’t have the skills necessary to avoid collisions.
While many collisions result in nothing more than bruised egos they can be very serious with people suffering paralysis and even death. The most common injury that results from collisions is damage to the legs.
And remember that collisions are not limited to people running into other people. Skiers and snowboarders will sometimes collide with trees, rocks, or even ski slope maintenance vehicles. Running into a stationary object when skiing or snowboarding can result in very serious injuries.
Falling.
Falling over is all part of what skiing and snowboarding are about. But falling is another way that many skiers damage their knees.
Avalanches.
Very few recreational skiers or snowboarders will ever have to negotiate an avalanche. Remaining within the indicated safe areas should be enough to avoid avalanches.
